The Thirteenth Tale

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) The Thirteenth Tale – Diane Setterfield

This was my second time listening to ‘The Thirteenth Tale’ by Diane Setterfield on audiobook and I loved it just as much this time as the first! It’s a dark story filled with disturbing characters which fits perfectly into the gothic/ghost story genre that I love to read this time of year.

Margaret Lea is asked by Vida Winter (a famous but mysterious novelist) to write Miss Winter’s life story. In order to do so, Margaret must travel to Vida Winter’s estate and stay while she methodically tells her tale. Throughout Miss Winter’s tale, Margaret finds herself questioning the veracity of what has been told her and thus she begins to investigate particular aspects of Vida’s story, which inevitably leads to more questions and a delving into her own family’s dark secrets.

This is a haunting tale of love, loss, family, and secrets too terrible to even acknowledge. Setterfield has a gorgeous writing style that pulls you in and makes you want to keep reading (listening in my case). If you’re a fan of gothic literature and love a good creepy tale, I highly recommend this book! It’s a perfect fall read!

Read on my friends!
