I’ve been a Sherlock Holmes fan since I first encountered Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories in an English literature class in college. We read only a few of the short stories but I immediately adored (and hated) Holmes’ eccentric personality and nearly complete disregard for social conventions.
Over the years I have read and re-read most of the short stories but somehow I had missed the longer, more complete narratives so I was thrilled when EVERYTHING was included in this audio reading of the Sherlock Holmes stories!! Stephen Fry even wrote and read his own introductions to each section which included historical information about Doyle’s writing career and how the public responded to his latest Holmes stories. Also included in the introductions was historical context for better understanding the events/organizations/people participating in the narratives. I found this to be extremely enlightening and certainly helped me to better understand the ins and outs of Holmes’ investigations.
Listening to this collection was so much fun and a must-listen for all Sherlock Holmes fans! You won’t be disappointed. Stephen Fry takes on the role/voice of each character and truly brings these classic mystery stories to life.
