Book Review: Amulet

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) – Worth It!

I love a graphic novel and “Amulet: The Stone Keeper” by Kazu Kibuishi has been recommended many times specifically for my twin boys and after sitting on my shelf for over a year I finally got to Book #1.

And it was a delight of a book! I love to read a quick graphic novel after a heavier read or something that has required a great deal of emotional energy and “Amulet” provided that needed break with wit, joy and beautiful art.  One of my favorite things about graphic novels is the level of artist work given to the framing and Kibuishi’s work is utterly amazing.  Deeply detailed with saturated colors and semi-realism the illustrations pulled me in and created the world for me quickly and succinctly.

The only place series don’t irritate me is in graphic novels and this might simply be because they are quick and easy to read and can be reread in a single sitting if necessary to read the next in the series.  I look forward to continuing in this series but I am not absolutely compelled to stop everything else and read it in its entirety.  I imagine that has more to do with where I am than it does the series itself.  I am glad to have it on my shelf for my kiddos and for myself.

Happy Reading!
