(4 / 5) The London Séance Society – Sarah Penner
This book hit all of the right notes for me! Strong and complex female lead characters, a twisting and complicated murder mystery, and of course, it takes place in one of my favorite literary times/places…Victorian England.
I read Sarah Penner’s, ‘The Lost Apothecary’ and thoroughly enjoyed it so I was very much looking forward to reading her new book, The London Séance Society! This is the perfect ‘fun read’ for me and I devoured this book in less than 2 days! While I willingly concede that this book was not anything life altering or profound in nature, I found it compelling and a very entertaining dark murder mystery.
The main character, Lenna, is a skeptical student of the supernatural arts but finds herself wrapped up in a scheme to find the murderer of the London Séance Society by utilizing the supposed benefits of connecting with the dead during a séance. However, Lenna has an ulterior motive as she wants to see if she can communicate with her dead sister, Evie, to find out how she was killed. As the mystery unfolds, Lenna finds herself attracted to her female mentor which is both exhilarating and unnerving for a woman living in Victorian England.
If you’re looking for a good murder mystery with a touch of romance, I highly recommend this book. It’s a sufficiently complex story with intriguing characters and a few unexpected twists and turns!
Read on my friends!
