The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski

2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) – Meh…

There comes a point apparently when one has read so many things that everything starts to sound the same and it takes a great deal to actually surprise, delight or inspire. After reading the much talked about and highly recommended, “The Witcher: The Last Wish” I am realizing this might be where I find myself, especially in regards to fantasy.

After reading this first book of short stories, which is the recommended first read if you haven’t read from this world yet, I was meh. There is nothing wrong with these stories. I certainly followed the plot and the character development. I will say it follows much of the first season of Netflix and so it was interesting to meet these characters in a slightly varied world. It was an entertaining read, just nothing spectacular for my taste.

The book makes it clear that the basis of the Witcher’s stories are retold fairy tales which hadn’t come across as strongly in the show for me. I am not a huge fan of retold fairy tales. It has never been my favorite genre even when it includes a lot more sex, blood, violence and death. I have decided I will give the series through the first two books of short stories and the first novel, “Blood of Elves.”

Happy Reading!
