The Hacienda

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) The Hacienda – Isabel Canas

I love a creepy, atmospheric read this time of year and ‘The Hacienda’ certainly fit the bill! This novel utilizes the classic gothic literary theme of a house/mansion with its own life, personality, and ability to ‘act’ and interact with the human characters in the story. While the ‘house with a personality’ has been done before, Canas’ novel offers a few new twists on the classic literary theme.

The main character, Beatriz, marries a man she does not love so that she can have some security for herself and her mother after the brutal murder of her father. She is certain that the country home of her new husband will offer her refuge and a safe and happy place for her and her mother. However, soon after Beatriz’s arrival she realizes this house is anything but safe and the people who reside there and the neighboring village are keeping secrets.

Isabel Canas creates an atmosphere of suspense and otherworldly happenings with a cast of characters who keep you questioning who is an ally and who is an adversary. Her writing is easy to read and vivid in her descriptions of the strange and creepy house and the happenings within and without. If you’re looking for a creepy (but not scary) Halloween read, I definitely recommend picking up Isabel Canas’ ‘The Hacienda’.
