Book Review: The Murder of Mr. Wickham

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray

I can honestly say that this book felt like reading a Jane Austen novel…with a twist! Claudia Gray’s writing definitely harkens back to the writing style and time period of Jane Austen and since Gray utilized Austen’s characters to write this book, it truly felt like I was enjoying another Jane Austen novel.

I listened to this book and was grateful that the plot/mystery wasn’t overly complicated since I started/stopped at odd places and oftentimes in the middle of an important scene or conversation. Basically, Emma is hosting a month-long ‘dinner party’ with all of the characters from Jane Austen’s novels and Mr. Wickham arrives uninvited and unannounced!! Needless to say, things don’t turn out well for Mr. Wickham.

The one bit of writing that I appreciated from Gray was her re-introduction of the important characters and how they were connected/not connected to one another. Placing this at the beginning of the novel rather than throughout as characters arrive was a most helpful refresher since I haven’t read Jane Austen in a few years. Overall, this book was a fun and engaging mystery novel that was perhaps a bit predictable but then again, so were most of Jane Austen’s stories.

Read on my friends!
