Book Review: On Juneteenth

5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5) On Juneteenth – Annette Gordon-Reed

This is a book that everyone should read…maybe even become required reading in high schools. It’s short and easily digestible while still being poignant and powerful.

As a Texas native, Annette Gordon-Reed tells the story of Juneteenth from a Black American perspective which gives this history book a personal touch. She discusses the history of Texas and Juneteenth but also her own family history and traditions surrounding the celebration of Juneteenth and its meaning for her family and Texas community.

As an historian myself, I continually find myself arguing that history is more than names and dates…history is the ‘story’ and the ‘meaning’ we give the story. Gordon-Reed’s history does just that, provides a meaningful, historical story about Juneteenth. I highly recommend picking up this book, you will not regret it.
