A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5) – It Completes Me!

I have a friend with whom I share very similar taste in books. Not everything she loves I love, or vice-versa, but much of what we share with each other resonates with the other. Earlier this year, I had asked The Book War community to share their favorite 2023 reads so far and she shared Becky Chambers’ “A Psalm for the Wild-Built.” The title both confused and intrigued me so I decided to pick this short novella up the other day and it is an absolute delight.

A Huge Award Winning 150 page novel, “A Psalm for the Wild-Built” begins the relationship and what I can only assume will become a journey of a monk and a robot. It places these characters into a future world where robots become sentient and instead of resentment, violence and oppression, humans and robots decide to honor each others’ agency and privacy. These two characters are the reunion of those worlds and it is a beautiful and charming story on “meaning of life” stuff.

I honestly can’t recommend this book enough. Particularly if you are looking for something unique, heartwarming but also philosophical in the best sense of that word, I encourage you to pick this book up and enjoy the world, the characters and the meaning-making within these pages.

Happy Reading!
